EMDR Therapy for Trauma & PTSD
in York
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE for the treatment of PTSD. It can also help people recover from the lasting effects of trauma, distressing life experiences, anxiety, phobias and other difficulties linked to past events.

EMDR Therapy for Trauma & Distressing Experiences
When we experience something overwhelming or traumatic, sometimes the brain is unable to fully process what has happened. The memory can become "stuck", continuing to feel as though it is happening in the present rather than being something that happened in the past. This can lead to distressing memories, intrusive thoughts, strong emotions, physical sensations, avoidance, anxiety or feeling constantly on alert.
EMDR aims to help the brain reprocess these experiences so that the memories become less emotionally overwhelming and feel more like a normal memory of something that has happened. The goal is not to erase memories, but to reduce the distress attached to them so they no longer have the same impact on your present life.
How does EMDR work?
EMDR uses a structured approach that combines talking therapy with bilateral stimulation. This may involve guided eye movements, alternating sounds or gentle tapping, while you briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory or experience.
The process helps your brain access and reprocess difficult memories, allowing new connections and perspectives to develop. Many people find that memories become less vivid, emotions reduce in intensity, and previously held beliefs such as "I am not safe", "It was my fault" or "I am powerless" can shift towards more balanced and compassionate beliefs.
Although EMDR can sometimes appear unusual compared to traditional talking therapies, it is a carefully structured therapy delivered by trained practitioners. You remain in control throughout the process, and we work collaboratively at a pace that feels manageable.
What can EMDR help with?
EMDR is particularly effective for trauma-related difficulties, including:
-
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
-
Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
-
Childhood trauma and developmental trauma
-
Abuse, neglect or difficult early experiences
-
Accidents, medical trauma (such as birth trauma) or frightening experiences
-
Relationship trauma
-
Grief and distressing losses
-
Workplace trauma
-
Anxiety linked to past experiences or phobias
EMDR may also be helpful where difficult life experiences contribute to symptoms such as anxiety, panic, depression, shame, low self-esteem or feeling emotionally stuck.
What can I expect from EMDR therapy?
EMDR is not simply about revisiting traumatic events. Before any processing begins, we spend time building safety, understanding your history and developing strategies to help you manage difficult emotions. This preparation phase is an important part of therapy and ensures that EMDR is appropriate and that you feel ready.
During EMDR sessions, you will remain awake and aware, and you will not be asked to share more than you feel comfortable sharing. Many people are surprised that they do not need to describe every detail of a traumatic experience for processing to take place.
A typical EMDR session may involve:
-
Understanding your difficulties and identifying memories or experiences that continue to affect you
-
Developing grounding and emotional regulation strategies
-
Identifying distressing thoughts, emotions and body sensations connected to memories
-
Using bilateral stimulation to support reprocessing
-
Developing more helpful beliefs and a greater sense of safety and control
Everyone responds differently to EMDR. Some people notice changes relatively quickly, while others, particularly those with multiple or longstanding experiences of trauma, may need a longer period of therapy and a slower, more phased approach.

As an EMDR Practitioner and BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, I integrate EMDR with other evidence-based approaches including CBT, ACT, Compassion-Focused Therapy and somatic approaches.
I work collaboratively with clients to understand not only what has happened to them, but how those experiences continue to affect their thoughts, emotions, relationships and sense of self. My aim is to provide a safe, compassionate space where difficult experiences can be processed at a pace that feels right for you.
